Discover how Scape and RMIT University’s Peer Support Program is helping Melbourne students connect, access wellbeing support and feel at home.

Students supporting students, right where they live

Our new peer support program with RMIT puts social work students inside some of our Scape Melbourne homes, so help is never far from your front door.

Moving away from home is exciting. It can also be lonely, confusing and a lot to figure out on your own.

That’s why we’ve teamed up with RMIT University on the Scape Peer Support Program. RMIT Bachelor and Master of Social Work students complete their placements with us, living the same student life as our residents and offering a friendly first point of contact for wellbeing.

Designed by students, for students

The program started in January 2026 with five students from India, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Vietnam and Melbourne. They co-designed it, including events to help residents connect and feel more at home. A second cohort of seven joined in July.

The difference showed up fast

In just four weeks, the number of residents referring themselves for peer support more than doubled compared with the previous placement period.

Someone who gets it

Peer support workers offer informal guidance, help residents find counselling and community services, and run wellbeing activities. They don’t replace professional mental health services. They make the first step easier.

“Resilience starts at home, and Scape is home for students living here. This initiative brings support into the home through someone who is familiar, relatable and accessible.”

Lisa Wright, Scape Wellbeing Manager

What’s next

Peer support workers are now in five Melbourne Scape homes:

  • Swanston
  • Franklin
  • Victoria Street
  • Uni Square
  • Queensberry

The program continues in 2027, with the ambition to reach all 15 Victorian Scape properties by 2028.

It’s one more way we’re putting our residents’ wellbeing at the centre of home.
