Preventing and Responding to Gender-Based Violence at Scape

The Australian Government has introduced a new National Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender-Based Violence in Higher Education.
This Code provides a clear framework for universities and student accommodation providers to strengthen safety, improve awareness, and ensure appropriate responses to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) across all parts of student life. The Code requires student accommodation providers like Scape to have clear prevention strategies, pathways for reporting, specialist support systems, and robust governance and accountability measures in place.

Our Commitment

At Scape, we believe every student deserves to feel safe, respected and supported where they live.
We are committed to a zero-tolerance approach to gender-based violence and continue to set the standard for excellence in prevention, response and community safety within the student accommodation sector.
Scape already has strong systems, culture and controls that help keep students safe, and we are continuously improving our approach in line with community expectations, best practice and the National Code.
We are proud to be part of TLC – The Earth’s Best Living Company, and we bring that purpose to life by creating communities where people feel welcome, valued and empowered to speak up.

Our Response

In response to the National Code, Scape has established a pragmatic, effective and Code-aligned framework to prevent and respond to gender-based violence across every one of our accommodation sites.
We have three core policy documents that guide our approach:

These documents outline:

  • clear expectations of behaviour for staff, residents, contractors and visitors;
  • specialist training and awareness programs;
  • accessible and confidential reporting options;
  • trauma-informed, person-centred support processes and specialist services;
  • strong governance, data monitoring and continuous improvement; and
  • meaningful partnerships with universities and specialist support services.

Our approach is designed to be practical, respectful and easy to understand, ensuring students and families can have confidence in Scape’s systems and support at every step.

Leading the Sector

Scape has long invested in safe, high-quality living environments, including:

  • secure building access, onsite support and security;
  • CCTV in common areas;
  • trained staff, mental health first aiders and accessible wellbeing support options (e.g. Sonder);
  • confidential reporting channels and specialist GBV Officers;
  • partnerships with universities, health services and crisis support providers;
  • good building design, strong processes and an accountable and transparent culture.

We are committed to sector leadership and setting the benchmark for what student living should be: safe, inclusive and supportive.

Confidence for Parents, Students and Partners

We want students, parents, university partners and stakeholders to feel reassured that Scape is taking proactive, credible and comprehensive action to address gender-based violence and our obligations under the National Code.
Our systems are robust, our approach is transparent, and our commitment is unwavering.
