BEE THE CHANGE!

Bees and beekeeping have been around for centuries, and without them, our ecosystem would suffer drastically. The Australian beekeeping industry has been faced with its greatest challenge yet: the discovery of the Varroa destructor mite, which threatens the country's standing as the last Bee Eden in the world. However, all hope is not lost. With the right steps taken, we can limit the spread of this mite, ensuring a thriving bee population and a greener future for all.

Scape is thrilled to be part of the solution by introducing beekeeping to help protect and promote a healthy environment. In our mission to promote natural pollination and protect bees from mite infestation, we have partnered with some of the most esteemed beekeeping companies in the country.

OUR BEEHIVES

SYDNEY

Scape Redfern is buzzing with excitement about our innovative collaboration with The Urban Beehive! The weather conditions in 2021 were favourable and we yielded 90 kilograms of honey and 6 kilograms of beeswax. This beeswax has been crafted into scented balms, and students have been able to participate in lip balm-making workshops utilizing Scape beeswax and learn about the plight of bees from our resident beekeeper. Despite the challenging weather in 2022 we were able to harvest 33 kilograms of honey. Now the hives are being packed down for winter, but the sweet taste of success is still in the air! We're confident that our partnership with The Urban Beehive will continue to bear fruit.

MELBOURNE

Scape Lincoln College is thrilled to be partnered with Melbourne Rooftop Honey to bring more pollinators to the city and ensure our gardens remain healthy and abundant. However, this season, beekeepers in Victoria have faced an unprecedented challenge due to the unusually wet spring. With pollen coming in without the nectar it needs, bee numbers exploded beyond what could be supported, leading to a drastic reduction in stores and, in some cases, complete collapse of colonies. As a result, no honey has been able to be taken from the hives this season. This is a stark reminder of the fragility of the ecosystem and how quickly problems can arise if the conditions are not optimal. It is a call to action for us to take steps to protect our bees and their habitats, to ensure the survival of these important pollinators.

BRISBANE

At Scape South Bank, we have partnered with Gary's Honey to create a home for our local bees and bring nature to our residents' doorsteps. We have installed four hives with European honeybees on the 13th floor balcony and a native beehive in the garden. Residents can now enjoy the hives on the balcony, watching the bees’ flit and flutter from the comfort of their own home and relishing the sweet sight of nature in action. We are delighted to have Gary's Honey's expertise and passion for the local bee population, and we look forward to the sweet treats that await us. In December, we were able to harvest 74 kilograms across the four hives. We are so excited to see what the future holds!

ADELAIDE

Scape in Adelaide has partnered with Adelaide Honey Farms and proudly hosts four hives at our University of Adelaide property. Despite the unfavourable weather conditions, including a severe storm in October, which resulted in the loss of 30% of bees , the remaining bees have shown their resilience and produced a harvest of approximately 20 kilograms at the end of February 2023. The bees are a mix of Carniolan bees, originally from Eastern Europe, and in pleasant weather they can produce up to 50 kilograms of multi-flora honey per year. We are excited to be part of Adelaide Honey Farm's passion and dedication to beekeeping and can't wait to sample the sweet fruits of our labor!
