Feeling overwhelmed by university deadlines? Reset your mind with our guide to the best meditation apps and mental health tips.

Exams, deadlines, group assignments, university is a lot. While there’s no app that writes your essay for you, there are some genuinely good ones that help you manage the mental load. Here’s the no-fuss guide.

Managing University Burnout and Deadline Stress

Burnout doesn’t arrive all at once. It creeps in, a few late nights, one too many all-nighters, until suddenly getting out of bed feels like the hardest part of your day.

Signs you might be burning out:

  • Struggling to concentrate even on simple tasks
  • Feeling exhausted no matter how much you sleep
  • Losing motivation for things you used to enjoy
  • Constant low-level anxiety that won’t go away

Even 10 minutes of mindfulness a day has been shown to reduce stress levels significantly. And you’re not alone in feeling it, Scape’s Gen Z Wellbeing Index found that student mental health is one of the biggest challenges facing uni students today.

Headspace

Structured, beginner-friendly, and genuinely good at what it does. Headspace walks you through meditation step-by-step with short, guided sessions, a dedicated exam stress pack, and SOS meditations for high-anxiety moments. Rated 4.8/5 on the App Store, the numbers don’t lie.

Calm

If your brain won’t switch off the night before a big exam, Calm is the one. Its Sleep Stories are narrated audio sessions designed to ease you into sleep, and its soundscape library is the best of any app on this list. Less structured than Headspace, but beautiful to use.

Smiling Mind

Australian, non-profit, and completely free, no ads, no paywall, no subscription. Built on evidence-based mindfulness practices and designed for all ages. If you only download one app from this list, make it this one.

Insight Timer

Over 100,000 free guided meditations from thousands of teachers worldwide. Whatever you’re after, sleep, focus, anxiety relief, a five-minute study break, it’s in here. The free version is excellent, making it the best value on the list by a long way.

Waking Up

Less “breathe and relax”, more “understand how your mind actually works.” Waking Up takes a science-backed, philosophical approach to mindfulness that suits students who want depth over decoration. Can’t afford the subscription? They offer free access, just ask.
