When it comes to studying for exams there can be many things that get in your way. You may lack the motivation needed to sit down for hours on end to review the entire semester’s learnings. Or perhaps there are gaps in your learning, where asking a fellow student could be just the answer.

That’s where a study group can come in handy, giving you the opportunity to get together with other university students, studying similar topics and pass on your knowledge to one another.

Benefits of study groups

  1. Won’t be tempted to procrastinate. When you’re studying from home there can be plenty of distractions like finding out what’s on TV and checking your mobile phone for social media updates. But when you’re in a study group, you’re literally forced to use that time to study.
  2. Can pick each other’s brains. The great thing about study groups is each student will have their own understanding and knowledge of the course and may have strengths in certain areas. You can then swap this information, to ensure you all understand the entire learnings of the subject.

Where can I find a study group in my area?

Now that you know the benefits of joining a study group, you may be wondering where exactly you can find one. Below is a list of ways to help you find the perfect study group for you:

  • Internet search. Websites like Meetup are a good place to start your search. You can see what study groups are available near you and choose a group depending on your area of interest. They also have study groups that are more social in nature allowing you to get to know other university students, which is great if you’re studying away from home
  • Your university’s website. The university you’re attending may also have a section on their site, which lists study groups currently available, as well as any other social clubs that you can join.
  • Speak to other students from your course. There may already be a group of students meeting within your course, or you could start a study group by asking other students if they’d be interested.

Joining a study group really is a great way to prepare for exam time. You’ll be able to learn from other students and could even meet a new friend or two.
