Scape Carlton is only a few minutes’ walk from Elizabeth Street, where you will find the city’s most accessible supermarkets and multi-cultural shopping street. Nearby is Lygon Street, where there’s several old-school Italian eateries that’ll make every food lover’s mouth water.
It’s not just all food though as Lygon Street is also home to Cinema Nova, the popular arthouse cinema, La Mama, a famous not-for profit theatre that’s home been home to cutting edge theatre since the 1960s, and Readings, the local independent bookstore chain that’s been around for over 4 decades.
Universities and Education
Our Carlton building is neatly situated in the heart of Melbourne’s education precinct and is conveniently close to many great institutions. RMIT is only 250 metres away and almost close enough to be our next-door neighbour. Several of the uni’s buildings only a short walk from our front door.
The University of Melbourne is less than 10 minutes’ walk and even less than that if you want to go by tram. Monash Parkville Campus is 20 minutes by tram. Unimelb’s Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) campus is a 25-minute walk or less than 15 minutes on the tram.
Students of Monash Clayton and Caulfield can enjoy a shuttle bus service to and from uni courtesy of Scape Shuttle running throughout the uni semesters. Talk about a perfect balance of city living and studying.
Public transport and getting around
Scape Carlton is located next to the free tram zone, which allows you to take trams within the CBD area for free. Eligible tram stops will have signs for this complimentary service so keep an eye out. The nearest train station is Melbourne Central Station, which is only a 5-minute walk away.
Located just a short walk away from Scape Carlton is the famous Melbourne Museum. The largest museum in the Southern Hemisphere, it is a place filled with rich culture and science that will give you insight into the history of Victoria through its many permanent displays and impressive temporary exhibitions.
Take in the sights and history at the heritage-listed Carlton Gardens, where you can soak in the tree-lined avenues, its majestic fountain, and the elegant Royal Exhibition Building, which was home to Australia’s first parliament and is one of the world’s oldest exhibition pavilions.
For all those animal lovers out there, we recommend heading to Melbourne Zoo, which is a 40-minute walk or a 20-minute train ride from Scape Carlton. It is Australia’s oldest zoo and is home to over 320 difference species of animals from all around the world. From lush rainforests where tigers and monkeys roam free to unique Australian wildlife like Koalas and kangaroos, Melbourne Zoo is an experience you won’t forget.
