Scape Swanston’s Ping Pong Art Installation Project
My name is Yuki, and I came to Melbourne in March 2019 for my Communication Design degree. I moved from Sydney because I was very curious about the creative and vibrant atmosphere in Melbourne, so I decided to check it out. I found Scape after searching online for the best student accommodation in Melbourne and chose Scape! The booking process is easy and flexible, and they have a very friendly team to help me out.
One afternoon I got a call from Scape team who knew that I was studying Communication Design and asked if I would be interested in participating in their Ping Pong Art Installation Project. The project was the opportunity for the students of Scape to work with local Melbourne street artists David Booth and Carla McRae and design a piece of art that represented the student experience, and then they would be printed onto a series of Ping Pong bats and displayed in Scape Swanston. After the call I was excited about the project and went to the first workshop. Initially, I was a bit nervous because I have never tried to design my illustrations knowing they could be displayed as a permanent installation. But after talking with David and Carla and discussing the brief, I knew this was going to be a fun project!
I already knew about David and Carla’s work and loved their artwork before I met them in person. When I first moved to Scape, I noticed the beautiful mural on the ground level near the lift and I went online to find the artists. I was so excited to talk to them in person and they shared lots of tips in the first and second workshops and found that the sessions were more like a very relaxed catch up. They really inspired and encouraged me a lot through the project.
I did eight illustrations and they all ended up being printed on the Ping Pong bats. On the launch night party, we were lucky to have two Olympic athletes join us at Scape and we all played Ping Pong together. There were also cupcakes and sweeties all over the place. It was a fun night and I found out there are so many good Ping Pong players living in Scape!
I feel so lucky to work with David and Carla and I have to say that Scape really has some cool ideas and activities!
